Colmar’s architecture is magnificent in every season of the year, with colorful houses and a strong German style. And they are very well preserved. That happens, because France and Germany controlled Colmar in alternate periods. Then, imagine Christmas in Colmar, adding to the architecture, a gorgeous Christmas decoration.

You will certainly find a lot of options of accommodation, even during Christmas in Colmar. We prefered to stay in Basel, in Switzerland, to visit the region. It worked very well.

1) OLD TOWN- CHRISTMAS IN COLMAR

In every street of the Historic District, you will find all kinds of stores selling different products made in Alsace, from decoration pieces to table towels, dish towels and wine, of course.

It’s very cold during Christmas in Colmar and this is the Capital of Wine in Alsace. You should try a delicate Pinot Blanc, a dry Riesling, maybe a Moscatel, a Gewürztraminer, robust and fragrant or a fruty red Pinot Noir. Just to get yourself warm! Options abound..

Are you hungry? Try the Tarte Flambée in one of the numerous Winstubs, as the typical local restaurants are called. We loved it.

2) LITTLE VENICE – CHRISTMAS IN COLMAR

The name  “Little Venice” was given to the Lauch River course in Colmar, because the houses there, were aligned at both sides of the river, giving direct access to the water, remembering the famous Italian city.

One of the highlights of Little Venice is the Quai de la Poissonnerie (Fishing Quay), accessible by a small bridge that crosses Rue des Tanneurs. Here, fisherman used to sell fresh fish caught in Colmar waters.

The Quai de la Poissonnerie takes you to Rue de Turenne, where the  “Krutenau” was located, old fruits and vegetables market.

And what about a boat tour during summer? The meeting point is under Saint Pierre Bridge. By the way, the view from this bridge is one of the most photographed by tourists.

House of Heads – Christmas in Colmar

The House of Heads was built in 1609. It’s a gorgeous building from the German Renaissance. Its name was given because of the 106 grotesques heads and masks that adorn its facade. Another attraction is the huge 03 floors bay-window .

The House of Heads was restored in 2012.

Address: 19 Rue des Têtes, Colmar
