MASP Highlights – Visit the best museum of Brazil

Did you know that the MASP, São Paulo Museum of Art, is currently considered the most important museum of art in the South Hemisphere?

I didn’t have the exact notion of its importance in the international scene. And I had already visited it a few times!

MASP- THE MOST IMPORTANT MUSEUM OF ART IN THE SOUTH HEMISPHERE

MASP has around 8000 artworks that go from the IV century until today. Because of that, the Musèe D’Orsay invited MASP to join the ” Club of the 19″ since 2008. What’s the importance? This means that MASP is a member of a very select group of 19 museums that have the most significant collection of european art from the XIX century, like the  Metropolitan from New York, The Art Institute of Chicago, Musèe D’Orsay itself and others.

MASP HIGHLIGHTS TIP: ON TUESDAYS, MASP ENTRANCE IS FREE!

That means that we have here in Brazil a wonderful museum and you don’t have to spend money with the entrance if you go on a Tuesday, the free entrance day.

Another detail: Don’t you think that all the masterpieces are always exposed. Maybe the one that you’d like to see or even one of the masterpieces that I’ve posted aren’t in any of the current expositions or are lend to another museum.

MASP HIGHLIGHTS IN THE PERMANENT COLLECTION

Among the considered highlights in MASP collection, I love the French ones. I adore Monet and Van Gogh, but there are pieces of Renoir, Manet, Cézanne, Modigliani, Gauguin, Matisse (above on the left – “The Plaster Torso”) and Toulouse-Lautrec (above on the right ” Monsieur Fourcade”) too. The amount and importance of the French masterpieces are incredible.

2)ITALIAN ART – MASP HIGHLIGHTS

From the Italian School, the highlights are Rafael, Bellini and Ticiano. Yes, the same Rafael famous by his frescoes in the Vaticano Museum!

The sculpture above is “Sleeping Diana” from the italian artist Giuseppe Mazzuoli. It’s huge, with around 5,91ft and with an incredible richness of details.

Besides “Sleeping Diana”, the MASP has the entire collection of 73 sculptures from  Edgar Degas and 03 of his paintings, including “Four Dancers in Scene” in the picture below.

7)TEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS – MASP HIGHLIGHTS

In December 2015 has begun the temporary exhibition Picture Gallery in Transformation –  The MASP collection returns to the Lina Bo Bardi crystal easels.

In this exhibition, 119 masterpieces from the permanent collection were again showed in the easels originally used since the inauguration of the current MASP headquarters in 1968 and that were kept away from the public in 1996. Excellent idea of trying to make visitors and masterpieces come closer.

The paintings were removed from the walls and with that,  happens a natural proximity between art and visitor and a feel of familiarity. Even though the organization of the pieces follows chronological order, in a meandering path, people can walk freely between the paintings.

Another interesting detail: The label of each painting is in the back of the artwork. This way, the visitor can connect freely with what calls his attention, not doing it because of the historic appeal or the famous artist.

The masterpieces showed are from 4 b.C. to 2008  and they represent the personal taste  of Pietro and Lina Bo Bardi , a couple that had resisted the hegemony of abstract art in the 40 and 50 decades. Some less known artists have their artwork shown here.

If you read the posts from Meus Destinos Imperdíveis, you know that we love  Monet and Van Gogh’s paintings and Rodin’s sculptures.

In this exhibition, Van Gogh’s paintings are são The Arlesienne (below on the right), The Schoolboy, The Stone Bench in the Garden of Saint-Paul Hospital and Landscape with Couple Walking and Crescent Moon (below on the left).

There are 02 Rodin sculptures.

Other paintings that called our attention:  Os Retirantes (The Retreatants) from Candido Portinari (below), Four Dancers in Scene from  Degas, Buste D’Homme (The Athlete) from Pablo Picasso, Girl with a Sheaf of Corn from Renoir and Portrait of a Young Man with Gold Chain from Rembrandt (Rembrandt’s famous composition between light and shadow is always magnificent).
