The city of Orvieto is situated in a position that resembles a natural pedestal and lives up to its elevated situation. It’s a well preserved city, it’s not crowded and has some special attractions: An awesome cathedral and a unique tour in the underground city where the population protected itself through long years of invasions and wars .
Visit Orvieto in 01 day!
1)HOW TO GO UP THE ORVIETO MOUNTAIN – ORVIETO IN 01 DAY
The best way to go from Piazzale Matteotti, in the lower part of Orvieto (where the train arrives), to the upper part, at the Piazza Cahen, is taking a cogwheel train. You can’t go wrong. You just have to get off the train, cross the street and buy your ticket. Don’t be surprised if a dog goes up with you. They are allowed inside the cogwheel train. The upper part of Orvieto, where you’re heading to, is called Orvieto Scalo.
2)ARRIVING AT ORVIETO SCALO: PIAZZA CAHEN
Getting off the cogwheel train you will be at Piazza Cahen. That’s where you will start your tour Orvieto in 01 day.
Walk to your left and visit Fortezza Albornoz and Porta Rocca. From this part of the city, you will have beautiful views of the valley. Only a part of the fortress still remains, but you can walk in the public gardens.
3)CORSO CAVOUR AND TORRE DEL MORO – ORVIETO IN 01 DAY
We crossed the plaza and walked Corso Cavour. A delightful street. You can see the Torre del Moro, located in the heart of the city, from far away. Beside the tower, is the crossing of Corso Cavour, Via de la Costituente and Via del Duomo, where we’re going now. You will walk these streets when getting to know Orvieto in 01 day.
If you are interested, you can climb up the stairs in the tower. The view is supposed to be beautiful.

4)DUOMO DI ORVIETO – ORVIETO IN 01 DAY
It’s Orvieto’s symbol and it’s one of the Seven Italian Marvels .The construction began in 1290 and was supported by both the Catholic Church and the city itself. We thought very interesting the way the stones were laid in the cathedral’s lateral walls, making them striped. The facade is fabulous. It’s so huge that it’s very difficult to frame it in a picture.
No doubt the Duomo di Orvieto is the best attraction when visiting Orvieto in 01 day.
The highlights are the rosace, the mosaics that shine with the sun light and the bas-reliefs. Get close to observe them.

Built around the XIV century, Palazzo del Popolo was the house of a very important institutional figure, the Captain of the People. Later became the mayor’s residence. Nowadays is a conference center and it isn’t opened for visitors.
6)SANT’ANDREA CHURCH – ORVIETO IN 01 DAY
Sant’Andrea Church is located at Piazza della Repubblica, beside the City Hall and a 12 sided tower. Sant’Andrea Church was very important in medieval times and it was the consecration place of cardinals and popes.
7)ORVIETO UNDERGROUND
Orvieto Underground is a very interesting tour. We strongly recommend you to do it when visiting Orvieto in 01 day.
It’s an immersion in the past of more than 3000 years of Orvieto, where you will find how people lived in different times and why.
The tour guide took us in a labyrinth of more than 1200 caverns, tunnels and wells that were man made inside the mountain, close to the Orvieto cliffs.
One of the highlights is a full medieval mill, with squeezers, fireplace and a place for the animals to move it.
We thought very interesting the fact that when people were besieged inside the mountain, they let openings in the cliff walls so the pigeons could get inside. They even digged niches in the walls for the birds to sleep. This way they always came back and procreated, serving as food.
It’s very difficult for me to accept the fact that the rain water wells were built under the pigeons niches. In the picture above, you can see the groove that led the rain water to the welland the pigeons niches.
This amazing labyrinth of caverns also served as shelter when the city was bombed during World War II( picture below)

8)HOW TO ARRIVE IN ORVIETO – ORVIETO IN 01 DAY
-BY TRAIN: We arrived by train from Rome. It’s easy and fast. Takes just around 01:15h. When you arrive in Termini, go directly to the automatic ticket booth of Trenitália, buy and print your ticket.
Reserve some time to go to the train platform. It is a bit far away. We traveled in a 2nd class Intercity train. It’s great. The second class ticket costs $17 euros. Daily departures usually every 90 min. At that day we were so tired that we slept too much in the morning. We only took the 10:30am train. Even so there were enough time to visit Orvieto.
If you are interested in Orvieto in 01 day, you will be probably going to Rome. That’s where we stayed in this part of our trip. Soon all the posts will be translated with all the information of this city.
