The New Year’s Eve party in Zurich is just unforgettable: Food kiosks, bars, live music in many different stages and an amazing fireworks show happening at Lake Zurich. The fireworks show is considered one of the most beautiful in Europe and they entertain anyone who is looking for a wonderful night!
The best part is that everything is very safe!
About a 100.000 people spend New Year’s Eve in Zurich every year. Why? Because it is spectacular! The fireworks last 15 minutes and are unbelievably beautiful. All the shapes and colors are going to leave you speechless. Many international sites compare it to Rio de Janeiro New Year’s Eve so it has got to be remarkable.
The biggest differences are: Hotel prices, that are way lower; the temperature, that on this time of the year leaves Zurich covered in snow and safety. The only downside is that the international flight tickets can be expensive, but traveling in Brazil can be just as expensive…
NEW YEAR’S EVE IN ZURICH TIP: THE FIREWORKS SHOW START AT 12:20 A.M.!
The best part is: Everything is perfectly organized. The party starts at 8:00 p.m. and goes til 3:00 a.m.. And if you are not located close to Stadthausquai, it is possible to hop on a tram and it will leave you near the party, where the streets are blocked. After that, is just walking and enjoying the heat of the event. You should really go well before the fireworks start so you can have dinner there.
NEW YEAR’S EVE IN ZURICH TIP: TAKE YOUR OWN CHAMPAGNE AND PLASTIC CUPS TO CELEBRATE PROPERLY!
HOW LONG SHOULD YOU STAY IN ZURICH IN ORDER TO ENJOY THE CITY AND NEW YEAR’S EVE?
We arrived in Zurich in the morning of the 31st of December and spent the whole day sightseeing. Then we left our stuff at the hotel and after resting for a bit, we went to the party.
Here we have a 1 day guide to get to know the city. There is a map at the end.
WHERE TO STAY IN ZURICH
There is no need to spend a lot in accommodation just to be close to Stadthausquai, because the tram works really well.
We stayed at Novotel Zurich City West, very good. It had a king size bed, a sofa bed, minibar and free wifi. The room was for 4 people and by today’s rate it would cost about US$152,00 on Booking.com.
We suggest that you program this trip as soon as possible, because that way it’s easier to get the best hotels with the best price.
GUIDE THROUGH THE BEST ATTRACTIONS IN ZURICH
1)THE OPERA HOUSE OF ZURICH – NEW YEAR’S EVE IN ZURICH
Zurich’s Opera House has a capacity for 1.100 people and it has been working since 1891.
We started our walk there, because it is very easy to get in Zurich and just leave you car parked in front of it.
Walk to the Quaibrücke and take lots of pictures.
2)FRAUMÜNSTER – NEW YEAR’S EVE IN ZURICH
The Fraumünster in Zurich (the one with the green tower in the picture above) is famous for it’s stained glasses from Chagall and Giacometti. Chagall created the 5 stained glass windows in 1970. Today it still attracts thousands of tourists. We sat and admired them for a long time.
Chagall had a saying that he took for life. It said ” When I create something from my heart, almost everything goes well”. He created those stained glasses when he was older and he had an excellent health until his death in 1985, with almost 98 years!
When I create something from my heart, almost everything goes well
Marc Chagall

Address: Münsterhof, 16
Behind Sibler there is also a very pretty Christmas shop.
3)ST. PETER’S CHURCH – NEW YEAR’S EVE IN ZURICH
St. Peter is the oldest parish church in Zurich. It has the biggest clock in Europe, with incredible 28,5ft .
Curiosity: Until 1911, St. Peter’s tower was used as a place from where they controlled fires.
ADDRESS: St. Peter Hofstatt
4)AUGUSTINERGASSE – NEW YEAR’S EVE IN ZURICH
Famous for it’s many bay windows that were used to spot the arrival of unwanted visitors.
The Augustinergasse connects Bahnhofstrasse with Augustiner Church and continues until St. Peter Hofstatt, a charming park in front of St. Peter’s church.
5)BAHNHOFSTRASSE – NEW YEAR’S EVE IN ZURICH
On this avenue of 0.9mi, you can find everything. The Bahnhofstrasse is attended by tourists as well as locals. The shops vary from little sophisticated boutiques to department stores.
We didn’t walk a lot on it, because we were focused on getting to know the city.
Like Sibler, we found PASTORINI SPIELZEUG by accident on our way to Limmatquai. It is a beautiful toy store. There are many floors with uncountable options of games and toys. If I had a younger sibling we would have bought a lot of stuff.
ADDRESS: Weinplatz, 3.
6)LIMMATQUAI – NEW YEAR’S EVE IN ZURICH
Limmatquai is where pedestrians can walk in a boardwalk that follows the Limmat River. Full of stores and restaurants, it is a great place for a relaxing walk.
7)GROSSMÜNSTER – NEW YEAR’S EVE IN ZURICH
Famous tourist attraction in Zurich, Grossmünster, according to the legends, was built on top of the graves of the saints Felix and Regula, patrons of the city.
Don’t forget to admire the beautiful bronze doors. They are hard to photograph, because they never stand still, with people coming and going all the time.
Other highlights of the visit are the decorated windows by Sigmar Pölke, famous german artist. He cut semi precious stones in very thin slices and with them, he decorated 7 windows. It’s amazing to see the light passing through them.
