Antelope Canyon at American midwest: The nature is magic, a gift with unbelievable shapes and wonderful colors. There is nothing similar at this slot canyon and there is a lot of things to do and visit in the region! Words and pictures cannot capture all of its beauty!
Last February we had an unforgettable and wonderful vacation.
The itinerary was perfect for us: a week of ski in Utah, followed by a car drive trip around the National Parks in USA.
We skied at Alta this time, then drove to Bryce Canyon National Park, Zion National Park, Grand Canyon, Antelope Canyon e finished at Las Vegas.
On this post we will highlight visiting Antelope Canyon, with several tips of the one of the best places we have ever gone!
HISTORY – VISITING ANTELOPE CANYON
The Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon situated at Page, in Arizona.
It was formed by the action of the nature for thousands of years. It is a sacred place for the Navajo indians and a preferred destination for tourists in this region. It is uncertain, exactly when the Antelope Canyon was discovered.
A slot canyon is very narrow, built by the force of the water running across the stones. It is much deeper than wide. Some slot canyons have less than 01m wide and can reach 30 m deep!
There are 2 sections at Antelope Canyon: the Upper Antelope Canyon, also known as “the Crack”, and the Lower Antelope Canyon, or “the Corkscrew”.
The indian name for the Upper Antelope Canyon means the place where the water run by the stones. For the Lower Antelope Canyon means spiral arches, really accurate as you can see by the photos!
UPPER OR LOWER CANYON? – VISITING ANTELOPE CANYON
We decided to visit the Lower Antelope Canyon because it is less crowded. Based on our research before the trip, both canyons are very similar.
At the Upper Antelope Canyon there is a crack from where the solar rays penetrate and the guides throw sand in the air. This provides very good pictures…As it was not a must for us, we went to the Lower Antelope Canyon.
As I mentioned, we rented a car at Rentalcars. The parking lot is large and you will not have problems to find a place. Right at the entrance, in the main building, there is booth ticket for the guided visit.
Nowadays, it is mandatory to visit the canyons using a licenced guide, because in 1997 there was a terrible accident killing 11 tourists. They were caught by a flood. Despite of the warnings from the local people, they decided to run the risk and unfortunately occurred the tragedy…
Currently it is very safe to visit the canyons since there is an alert system for the rains in the region.
After buying the tickets, we waited for around 20 min and then departed with a group of 10 tourists for the visit. Despite of the low season, the demand was relatively high. During the summer in USA, you will probably wait much longer in the lines.
THE SIGHTSEEING TOUR – VISITING ANTELOPE CANYON
Prepare yourself for unforgettable 75 min, mouth open and camera at your hands. The place is so beautiful that is hard to describe, with crazy rock formations, varying colors from yellow, red, brown and others difficult to define.
We wanted to visit the Antelope Canyon for a long time, based on the pictures we had seen on the internet, but the real experience was much better than anticipated.
We took the tour at 10h:40min. There was a sunny day, perfect to enjoy the Antelope Canyon. We could see all the contrasting colours and luminosity of the rocks.
VISITING ANTELOPE CANYON: THE BEST TIME OF THE DAY TO PHOTOGRAPH IS AROUND MIDDAY, WITH THE SUN ABOVE YOU.
The path is flat and accessible to everyone, including children and elderly in good physical conditions. There are some steep ladders, but walking carefully you can easily make it.
The guides organize the visits in a way that you feel comfortable during the way, no rush. We had plenty of time to enjoy and take several pictures. Our guide was perfect!
VISITING ANTELOPE CANYON: WEAR BOOTS OR TENNIS SHOES!
One of the attractions during the visit is visualize the rock formations. Look for the woman with the hair in the wind, the lion’s head, the indian with the headdress and even the Chewbacca from Star Wars.
It is interesting to see, when you finish and leave the canyon, how narrow it is from the surface.
It is unbelievable that underneath the small crack, there is a wonderful canyon such as the Antelope Canyon!
If you are crazy about photography, there is a specific photo guided tour of 2 hours. For this tour you will need a previous arrangement.
MORE PLACES TO VISIT IN THE REGION – VISITING ANTELOPE CANYON
You will certainly take advantage of the proximity and visit the beautiful Horseshoe Bend, only 8Km from Page. It is accessible by a short and easy 2.5Km round trip from the parking lot. You will be at 1.300 m above the sea level and you will admire a drop of around 350 m! Spectacular!
We also loved to visit the Glen Canyon Dam, a huge dam at Colorado river, in Page and the Lone Rock beach in Utah. Both places are close by the hotel we stayed at Page.
