Boston in 1 day by foot – Best attractions

Wonderful city, great culture and an excellent alternative if you are in New york and have some spare time you can spend visiting another cool city. It is possible to visit several attractions in Boston in one day, just walking.

I just had the opportunity to visit Boston. I was there twice, the first one in the end of  winter, with a lot of snow and cold weather (and it was early spring in USA). The second time, was in May and the weather was perfect, warm for the standards of that period of the year in the region.

This post will focus in a long walk around Boston in one day. Unfortunately, I didn’t have more time to know the city, but certainly, Boston offers attractions for 2 to 3 days.

A LITTLE BIT OF BOSTON HISTORY

Boston is one of the oldest cities in USA, founded in 1630 by the “Puritans” that came from England. That is the reason why this region is also know as New England.

Boston was the place for many historic events during the American Independence Revolution. After that, the city continued to be one of the most important ports in USA. And it was also a large industrial setting and a very rich cultural region, famous for the advanced education and academic level (some of the best universities in USA, such as Harvard and MIT are located there).

Because of all of that, Boston attracts lots of tourists, nearly 20 million people visit the city every year.

Let`s talk about our 1 day walking tour. I was blessed to be guided by a new friend, born and raised in Boston, passionate by the city. He knows every corner of Boston and its history. It was a huge plus in the walking tour and I will try to share what I have learned with him.

One of the advantages of Boston is that the city is not too large and has a relatively small population, 670.000 inhabitants. It allows you to walk around the central part of the city in 1 day.

We started at Copley Place. We took an Uber to get there. From Copley Place, we visited the following places:

1)TRINITY CHURCH – BOSTON IN 1 DAY BY FOOT – BEST ATTRACTIONS

It is located at Back Bay, only 300 meters from the Copley Center. Don`t miss it! The church is absolutely beautiful. We stayed around 20 min there, admiring it and taking pictures. One thing that I thought it was interesting, was the reflection of the church in a modern building right next to it. The organ and the stained glass windows of the church are sensational.

2)BOSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY – BOSTON IN 1 DAY BY FOOT – BEST ATTRACTIONS

Besides the Trinity Church, the Boston Public Library is an important and historic building of Boston. We didn’t have time to visit it this time..

3)FAIRMONT HOTEL LOBBY – BOSTON IN 1 DAY BY FOOT – BEST ATTRACTIONS

Make sure you get a sneak peak of the lobby of Fairmont Hotel. It was inspired by the famous Hall of Mirrors of Versailles in France. Awesome. According to my friend, the bar of the hotel is also a great place  to hang out and drink a coffee or beer.

4)COMMONWEALTH AVENUE – BOSTON IN 1 DAY BY FOOT – BEST ATTRACTIONS

A beautiful avenue, with several houses built on Victorian style on both sides and a great tree lined walkway. Here you will find, on every block, sculptures telling the history of Boston. Amazing!!

5)MARLBOROUGH STREET – BOSTON IN 1 DAY BY FOOT – BEST ATTRACTIONS

For me, one of the top places in the city. Also a wonderful street, full of trees and less crowded than Commonwealth Avenue. Look at all angles and picture yourself in the past, when the carriages were still running and the revolution was taking place.

6)BOSTON PUBLIC GARDEN – BOSTON IN 1 DAY BY FOOT – BEST ATTRACTIONS

A large and amazing park, with lots of history too. It was opened on the XVII century! Flower beds filled with flowers, super manicured gardens and cool people, enjoying the place. You can even try a paddle boat in the lake.

7)BEACON HILL – BOSTON IN 1 DAY BY FOOT – BEST ATTRACTIONS

Beacon Hill is the most historical district in Boston, full of old buildings, extremely well preserved. This is where the elite leaves.

It is the highest point in the city and in the past, was from here that the inhabitants were warned about possible invasions. I really enjoyed the small streets that reminded me some countries in Europe.

8)FINANCIAL DISTRICT – BOSTON IN 1 DAY BY FOOT – BEST ATTRACTIONS

The financial district is the most modern part of Boston. Here are located the main offices in the city, many modern buildings and very good restaurants.

9)MASSACHUSETTS STATE HOUSE – BOSTON IN 1 DAY BY FOOT – BEST ATTRACTIONS

The Massachusetts State House State is the government headquarter. The historic building is also super old and has a golden dome that stands out on the horizon.

Also loved this place. Very cool and with a nice walkway beside the water, filled with many bars and restaurants. Lots of people in the streets, enjoying the beautiful and sunny day.

We stopped for a beer and I was surprised to watch a small band playing Scottish bagpipes.

This is a summary and suggestion for a quick stay. I am sure I could spend much more time around here. I was highly impressed by Boston, its history, architecture and culture!

I recommend Boston as a great option to extend your trip to New York City. Boston is only 3 hours and a half by car from NYC.
